GPEU demanded the reinstatement of 159 employees

The Grameenphone Employees Union (GPEU) termed the laying off of 159 workers in the crisis period caused by the Corona pandemic as intentional misconduct of Grameenphone and demanded the immediate reinstatement of them. GPEU co-president Tanvir Timir made the demand at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Saturday. Mia Md. Shafiqur Rahman Masud, General Secretary of Grameenphone Employees Union, presented various arguments against the decision of this top mobile operator of the country. He also warned that if the laid-off workers are not reinstated, the movement that GPEU will form with all the workers' organizations in Bangladesh will spread beyond the borders of the country to the international level. Banglalink Employees Union President Golam Mahmud Sohag, Uni Bangladesh Liaison Council President Amjad Ali Khan, Garment Workers Trade Union Founder President Idris Ali, Trade Union Joint General Secretary Prakash Dutta and SCOP President Shahidullah Chowdhury were present at the press conference. At the end of the press conference, Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad-SCOP commented that it was 'illegal' to lay off Grameenphone workers by joining a human chain program in front of the press club. Ahsan Habib Bulbul, Member Secretary of SCOP, has sharply criticized the strategy adopted by Grameenphone to get the work done through outsourcing even after making a profit of Tk 4,000 crore.
